Welcome to Lake Eland Game Reserve

Game reserve activities and accommodation in the magnificent Oribi Gorge

Covering an impressive 2500 hectares with diverse ecosystems of bushveld, grassland, coastal forest and wetland this natural landscape offers a place of peace and tranquility.

Brothers Eric and Trevor Dunstone purchased the land for conservation and founded the reserve in 2003. A large lake shaped like the eland common in bushman paintings gives the reserve its name “Lake Eland” in honour of this magnificent antelope and its symbolic meaning to the San. This natural landscape is truly a place of peace and tranquility and can be found just a quick 40 minutes drive from Port Shepstone, South Coast of KwaZulu Natal.

Lake Eland Game Reserve is the perfect venue for day visitors, a family holiday, team building  or romantic getaway.

Activities to choose from include a self game drive, viewing the abundant wild life and flora to be seen from the comfort of your car. In addition guests can walk across our 80m suspension bridge, as well as our fabulous Zip Line Tour.

Horse rides, walking and single track mountain bike trails, paint ball, fishing, picnic sites  and specific 4×4 track are available.

The restaurant and fully licensed tea garden is close to a children’s playground.

Suspension Bridge & View Sites

One of the main highlights for guests visiting Lake Eland Game Reserve is to walk across our 80m Suspension Bridge. Not only is it exhilarating to walk across the Suspension Bridge, but it is quite an achievement for many of us who are fearful of heights. The views from the Suspension Bridge are breathtaking and you will be inspired by the magnificence and grandeur of the Oribi Gorge.

We have a saying in South Africa “Africa isn’t for sissies” and this adventurous walk across the bridge is definitely not for the faint-hearted. For those of you who are still considering whether or not to take the challenge and cross the bridge when you next visit Lake Eland, maybe this might help: each cable that supports the Suspension Bridge can hold 70 tons, so unless you’re carrying all your gym weights in your pockets, you should be just fine!

Restaurant & Tea Garden

Lake Eland’s Restaurant provides an indoor dining area as well as an outdoor deck and garden area, overlooking the Game Reserve. So prior, or after, a drive on the Game Reserve stop at the Tea Garden.

Lake Eland’s menu has been specifically designed by our executive chef to create a simple yet diverse selection of flavours and dishes. Our famous giant Burgers are a much loved favourite among visitors. Fully licensed outdoor bar.

Picnic & Braai Facilities

There are three designated picnic and braai facilities available on the Game Reserve. One being a short drive from reception, another  picnic & braai site is ideally situated nearby a stream among lush old trees providing shade for those hot summer days and the third being at the the Lake where there are shaded gazebos along its banks.

Self Game Drive

Lake Eland has a variety of routes that one can select depending on the amount of time you have to spend touring the Game Reserve.

One of the popular routes including a visit to the suspension bridge and caves past the Zip Line office 2-3 hours.  For a full day at Lake Eland continue the scenic drive on the reserve to Lake and back along the western side of the Reserve, which is just over 30km.

The roads can  accommodate all “normal” cars, no need for a 4×4.
